 Director of Academic Affairs

Candidate

Stevan Colin

3rd year, Student Advocacy Chair of ASUCM Senate,

Hello y’all!

A little background on who I am. I am a first generation, low income, Mexican-American with a goal to be academically successful in order to help my immigrant family rise from oppression. My personal academic goals are broad but eventually, I know I want to continue higher education. My academic experience at UC Merced has been difficult because I do not feel completely prepared for life after college. I want to advise those who may feel as frustrated as I have felt and advise all students to academic and career success.

I am currently the Chair of Student Advocacy in Senate, and I want to transcend my love for advocacy into academia. I want to help prepare those that are disadvantaged, for life after college. In everything I do, I will make sure to focus on those that do not have resources first.

All my goals are centered on preparing UC Merced students to have a successful future! One of my main goals is to strengthen and extend test prep programs on our campus. Many of us are first generation and low income, so we can not afford to pay for expensive test prep programs. This academic year, we offered test prep programs from the Princeton Review, but I want to extend this program or bring similar programs onto our campus. Many students were not given the opportunity to participate in this program because seats were limited. These programs have a major impact on where students can go to graduate school, medical school, law school, etc. If students do not properly study for these exams it will make a difference in their academic future.  These programs are expensive but I will do anything possible to provide them for students. Another one of my main goals is to finally have a stable Human Anatomy course on our campus because it is essential for Medical School.

However, I know how ASUCM works through my experiences and understand that there is a possibility of projects being disrupted. If I do not accomplish these big goals, I want to create a clear path for the next Director(s) of Academic Affairs to come. These goals will live on, in the circumstances, I do not accomplish them, they will be done.
