Silvia M. Vargas

3rd year, CAB's Volunteer In Programming (V.I.P) for the Large Scale Committee, Alpha Kappa Psi, M.E.S.H Lab

Hello UC Merced Bobcats. How are you today? I hope you are doing well. Many of you may recognize my face and that’s good because it means you have been to at least one Campus Activities Board event.

My name is Silvia Monique Vargas and I am excited to share that I am running for the Director of Student Activities. When I started at UC Merced, I knew I wanted to be involved on campus and grow socially, academically, professionally as well as gain experience. My spring semester of my freshman year was the start of my involvement; I joined the Campus Activities Board as a Volunteer In Programming (V.I.P) for the Large Scale Committee. My second year I pledged for the business professional fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi to help get better skills for post-undergraduate life. As for my third year at the university, I found myself as a research assistant with the M.E.SH. Lab.
I have been involved for with the Campus Activities Board for 2 years and it has always had my attention because it allows me to create events for the student body to attend, channel my inner event planner, and continue to better the events we host. I have been with Large-Scale where I have overseen the planning and execution of Treats N Beats and Cowchella. Being on this committee it has strengthened my communication skills, and developed better leadership skills, organization, and most importantly, value the thoughts of others. So, when I am sitting there in my meetings, it isn’t what “I” want, but more of what “the students” want. I have spent five out of my six semesters with  CAB and have served on three different boards. I have seen it at its best and at its lowest. My goals for the ASUCM Director of Student Activities is to communicate efficiently with ASUCM and CAB and as attend their meetings, be aware of what ASUCM is handling, and support them in a ways CAB can. I want to slowly bridge the gap by inviting them to our Board meetings, so they are up to date. I’d also want to oversee the process to raise the referendum to help get the board the budget they need to host events similar to our sister schools; UCR, UCD, and UCSB. It won’t happen overnight, but I can definitely try to see it through for the future boards. As for the board, I want to continue to advocate for a workspace on campus for the members of CAB. They do a lot for the school as well and also need a place to cut, print, or host their meetings! However, as the Director of Student Activities, also known as the CAB Director, I want to continue to foster innovative events among the board, continue to build the future of CAB, and as host events that students will be able to remember.
Remember a vote for me is a vote to go the extra mile to make you smile!
